What you should know about practicing criminology
CRIMINOLOGY
April 4, 2023 | Maria Barrera
Many times I felt restless. I wanted to help people without receiving prejudice for studying criminology.
We know that the essence of criminology and what is known about it are not compatible. Comprehensive ignorance prevails. I understood that later. I flashed a deep desire to delve deeper into a science that captivated exponentially as I delved deeper into it. Surely we share the same feeling.
A science created for me, a path that fills and feeds my essence, and keeps my conviction of human improvement firm.
Practicing criminology is not about mechanically learning theories and concepts, receiving some advice on the subject and putting it into practice.
Practicing criminology consciously leads you to a constant transformation , a seeing yourself in the world in synchrony with humanity, an understanding that shakes your mind, and an action that impacts more and more in each intervention carried out, and not what is mechanically pre-established by a handful of people who believe they have absolute theoretical knowledge.
And guess what, effectively practicing criminology is not synonymous with theory or techniques, rather, it is directly related to the integration of your human essence and criminology .

Science strives to be objective and limit cognitive biases that can spoil the results in its application. Not emotion (vocation and what follows from it). For this reason, theoretical and quantitative data are the holy grail for her.
No empañemos nuestra visión, no se hace ciencia sin interacción humana y sus sentires. No en criminología. This means that if you have academic degrees, specialties, theories, and practical experience that you have been told you must have to achieve success, have job opportunities, and more, but you do not practice from the core point, which is to understand man and his complexity [ behavior, human interactions, emotions] you are not exercising in depth, you are exercising from the dogma and structure that has been imposed on you.
That leads to terrible frustration and stagnation. Not only for you, but also for the sector we address in our practice.
And it couldn't be any other way, you are leaving aside the fact of knowing yourself as human in tune with another human, which is our nature. Suddenly they impose to exercise from separation, from non-identification, and in a “superior” state it is not possible to empathize, consequently the results are empty. Perhaps useful for those who impose action from the separatist framework and vision.
Exercise and get results
Question yourself.
Who do you want to obtain results for?
For your boss?
For you?
For the people you intervene?
For society?
To evolve as humanity?
To meet social standards?
Previously, I spoke to you about the mental structures, social expectations, cultural traditions and selfish attachments that are introjected from an early age, and that continue in the mind ( beliefs ) even after finishing university, until we decisively turn our observation in search of something further.
Breaking with these external structures requires unifying your theoretical, scientific, and practical knowledge with your intuition and your human sensitivity, and that requires mental firmness and courage, basic human skills. The same ones that are required to intervene from criminology, but also, integrate your skills, which are innate.
If you have felt frustrated, stuck, even though criminology is your thing, it is because you do not recognize your abilities, or you have simply been told that you should not use them, you have internalized and given greater power to the external and what you should be and do. . Become aware of it.
There is a clear separation between formal knowledge and informal knowledge (curiously, the one that gives you the best results), that separation leads to an eminent stagnation that the vast majority of criminologists are destined to encounter.
When I was working in the Penitentiary System of my country, I observed some colleagues from the operational team, they only waited for the departure time, from the moment they arrived at the workplace, with no intention of investigating, sharing, or decisively contributing to the environment, that clearly indicated a disenchantment and aggravation. separation regarding their training and their field of intervention.
The same thing happened in the other institutions where he worked.
A very common type of stagnation occurs in those who have a formal job, you work in a place where your profile is required, but you are not connected.
Not finding a job practicing your profession is a clearer and more visible stagnation, more than due to a lack of opportunities, it is related to this disintegration of knowledge between science and essence. Your essence.
It is easier to imitate than to integrate, this is a type of stagnation that we find in masses today.
How to get out of stagnation?
Essence before knowledge, that is the initial equation. The next step is integration.
The only thing valuable is knowledge, and we have believed it to the point that talking or listening to talk about essence seems absurd to us. It seems absurd to us to put ourselves in the foreground, to know ourselves in depth and to develop our human capacities and abilities.

It happens that when we integrate, we advance. There is no limitation anymore.
When you find yourself in a space, circumstances, work or with people that limit that integration, it is time to discern.
Analyze if this is how you want to live your life, if your training and your skills are so incompatible that you could hardly integrate them.
What you can do
KNOW YOURSELF without pre-established mental structures of what you should be and do.
FOCUS on what you want to create and achieve?
QUESTION YOURSELF : why do you want to create and achieve it?
PROMOTE YOURSELF by researching, reading, integrating knowledge that nourishes your essence and your knowledge.
GET EXCITED , give yourself permission to feel humanly, the results surpass all understanding.
Something new is coming.
